Orthokeratology at Optique Inc in Dallas, TX
Medical science has developed some remarkably effective methods of compensating for refractive errors (abnormalities of the eye that interfere with a normal refraction of light) -- from eyeglasses to contact lenses and even LASIK surgery. But you may have wished you could simply wake up one morning and "magically" enjoy a day of lens-free visual clarity without any need for surgery. Now medical science has done it again by offering just such an option in the form of orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k. Optique Inc is happy to make this form of vision correction available to your whole family.
How Ortho-K Works
When the eye is too short, too elongated, or has corneal irregularities, refractive errors are the usual result. For example, an elongated eye will cause images to come into focus before they reach the retina, resulting in myopia (nearsightedness). The opposite problem, a foreshortened eyeball, will cause hyperopia (farsightedness). An abnormally-shaped cornea may cause another type of refractive error called astigmatism. Eyeglasses and contact lenses correct vision by "bending" the incoming light so it will end up entering the eye more normally. LASIK surgery changes the cornea permanently to achieve the same effect. But orthokeratology offers the best of both worlds -- accurate vision correction without either daytime lenses or permanent surgical alteration.
Ortho-k employs specialized contact lenses that are worn only during sleep. These lenses actually mold the cornea into the ideal new shape to correct for your particular refractive error. When you wake up in the morning, you can remove the lenses and go through your day with excellent vision. In some people, this effect lasts for several days; others may want to wear their ortho-k lenses to bed more frequently.
Why Ortho-K Is Great for Myopia
While ortho-k can correct both hyperopia and astigmatism, it is especially effective at correcting myopia. Perhaps its most amazing benefit is its ability to slow the advance of myopia during childhood, the time of life when this condition usually causes the most substantial changes to the eye's shape. Studies have shown that nearsighted children who wear ortho-k lenses consistently for an extended period of time develop less severe myopia than kids who rely on ordinary glasses or contacts. If your child is near-sighted, ortho-k could set the stage for better eyesight later in life.
